What is an Infectious Disease (ID) Specialist?
Infectious disease specialists are board certified physicians who have completed specialty training in infectious diseases after completing their training in internal medicine. ID specialists are often called “medical detectives” and may be consulted by a primary care physician or other medical or surgical specialist for difficult cases or an illness which is difficult to diagnose, is accompanied by a high fever or does not respond to treatment. Often we must provide treatment on an urgent basis.
Infectious disease specialists may order procedures like blood tests, cultures, x-rays and other advanced tests including MRIs. Treatment may include medications, usually antibiotics, to fight and eliminate infection. Medication can be given orally or intravenously (IV).
Infectious disease specialists also see healthy people such as travelers who require special immunizations and precautions to prevent disease.
